Can somebody ID this 380mm wheel for me please!

The thread that never goes away!!!!!

I just acquired this 380mm wheel. It has a paper tag attached to it with the part # 901.603.805.0 I previously thought all 380mm wheels were supposed to have 914 part #'s - perhaps this tag is wrong???

Anyhow, I have attached a pic of the hub and would like to know what I have to do to mount a turn signal canceller and then mount this puppy in my '70S. All input is much appreciated!

Talking If it is the same as a 65-68.....

then what ya do is to take off the plastic collum cover and expose the back of the wheel to the point where it looks same as the original, basically the flat back with splined shaft interface.

I reused my stock cancel ring. There were holes threaded in the back of the wheel but in the wrong places. I just drilled new holes in my original wheel's cancel ring and mounted it to the new one. Works perfectly.

    Rob,

Clearly the wheel won't fit and you should just sell that car to ME!!!!

I am with George the number does not compute and the RS wheel number was 914 347 806 10 according to the parts book

Rob - I would say that's an imitation leather 914 wheel. If you remove the horn pad, you will find the part number & date stamped into the central alloy hub.

I would guess that the part number is 914 347 809 00 & the date will most likely be mid-'72 - end '74.

You need to remove the black plastic 'spacer' from the rear of the wheel (4 screws) & then, using your turnsignal cancelling ring as a template, drill & countersink 2 x 3.5mm holes. These need to be tapped to M4 thread, then use a couple of M4 csk machine screws to attach the turnsignal cancelling ring.

    Andy,

Mighty close guess. I twisted off the horn cover and the # is 914 347 805 11

Date stamp is 72 5, which I guess means May of '72??

THanks to all for your help. I think I knowwhat to do now. Best regards to all.

    That's a leather-rimmed 914 wheel.

    Da!

The part number does not mean anything, if the hub face on the outer surface is counter sunk and the rear collar has a 1mm raised lip outside the splines its a 914-4, if it does not have these features it will work on a 914-6 or 911 application. 914-4 wheels came both ways but always had the plastic extension for the 914-4 application. If the outer nut face is flat and the collar is not raised outside the splines about 1mm its what you want. If it is off of a 914-4 and has these features remove the plastic extension and you will likely see that there are 6 not 4 holes for the signal cancel ring. The 2 extra holes are for 911 914-6 applications. I watched many people at the German Auto Fest debating what is right. Shame on anyone who is paying big money for a so called "original RS wheel" or "914-6" wheel. Look at the wheel, again counter sunk? Raised collar? 4 or 6 holes on the back? Forget about the part number.
