    Tie Down Points - 73 vs 78?

A shipping company is telling me a '73 requires a different tie down method than a '78.

Can anybody chime in here and explain the differences?

Although, I don't really suspect any.

    Thanks

I can't think of any differences. I transport several cars a week and pass the tie down straps through the rims, but the shipper may want to strap the body down to compress the suspension.

    None that I know of...

I'd have to agree with Nick on this. I've transported all types of 911s and 914s too, and your tie-down options are the same. Through the wheels with straps, over the tires with a "basket" harness or the way I do it, right to the suspension.

Straps are the best, but if they are going to use chains it could be difficult to wrap rhe suspension without scratching. I'd find that out.

No matter where strapped, chains are awful - they have no give. I use straps around the suspension on my 911 and my racecar.

    Thanks for the input, guys.
Looks like for open carriers, they strap or chain to the frame/ suspension.
If enclosed, it'll be wheel strapped and treated to an air-ride.

Since it's not a whole lot more, I opted for the enclosed. I figure, the car survived this long (31 years!) without getting mucked-up. Why take a silly gamble now? Besides, it doesn't take much to inflict $300 (diff. enclosed vs open) worth of not-readily-visible damage to an old 911...
