    Post New Calif.emission law

Has anyone been able to find and then read the new law? I am interested if it has any implications on vintage cars.I am in Az., but this will have national implications. The main thrust is on new car emissions from what I have seen, but the filter down effect on having our cars in compliance at some point is of interst to us all.Observations and comments will be appreciated. Thanks. TFM

There is a large thread on Pelican dealing with the 30 rolling exemption. In a nutshell. The "rolling" part has been eliminated. It is frozen at year 1975 inclusive.

The rest of the law mandates much lower emissions and 44 MPG on new vehicles; 26 on light trucks, which includes SUV's AFIK. That's a very brief overview of the situation.

All the boyz in CA should be jumping for joy that finally a Govenator has done something about Global Warming, the Environment and Oil depletion/conservation.......It's a great day for Liberals in the State of California...your elected officals are doing what you voted them in for....

    I didn't vote for them!

Yup, the way I understand it is: 1976 and newer gets smogged from now on (but to what standards? YOM?) And 1975 and older is exempt.

Alex brings up a GREAT question...

As far as I know today's emission test equipment will not even read what comes out of a 'clean' running '76 car.... their scales start to low!

So, like Alex implies... if their runn'n them to today's standards ... FORGETABOUTIT... none will pass

About 8 years ago when we still had to smog from 1966 ... my old pre-rebuild smokey '67 Chevelle still passed because the standards were so lose... don't think that will be the case today...

About Time California Caught Up with Orygun

Sad to say, but I am having trouble getting too worked up on this issue. Per the Oregon DMV Site:

"Emissions testing is required by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in the Portland metropolitan and Medford areas. In the Portland area, you're required to have your vehicle inspected if it is a 1975 or newer model."

This rule has been in place for at least 5 years.

Yet another reason Long Noses rule!
