    Proud and fortunate moment …

For about an hour in ’98 I was one of the happiest and proudest guys in Porschedom…

At Monterey for the ‘Year of the Porsche’, I was parked on the ‘left’ side of the display area in the infield looking at the ‘exemplars’ of 911’s, from ’64 though ’98, parked on the ‘right’ side when our friend Fred Stewart came running over to me yelling ‘They need your car!!’…...

Here was the deal... The PCA had already chose the examples of all the years well ahead of time, and the well deserved example of the ’73-S was Bata Mataja’s beautiful x-Otis Chandler silver coupe… BUT, Bata was racing his 356 AND manning his mini-356 marry-go-round for the kids and couldn’t bring his ‘73 all the way over to the display area … The PCA was in a bind…
SO, with a good word from Fred, sight-un-seen, Joe Hartman (PCA Valuation Committee Chair) issued a ’73-S Examplar plaque and told me to park on the ‘OTHER’ side and get ready for the ‘drive around’!!! They put me in line ahead of a RS lightweight and RS touring and behind Dr. Tom Chang’s incredible ’72-S Targa. As we drove out on the track it would be difficult to explain the look on Joe Hartman’s face when he realized that his substituted ‘example’ of a ’73-S had flares and a duck tail … kind-of-a left eye twitch...

So… for being in the right place at the right time… and a little help from my friends… Me, my buddy Thierry , and the old blue car seemed to not even touch the pavement for about an hour…

    Cheers,

    Chuck,

Well Done and congratulations. I know how you feel. I felt the same way at Rennsport Reunion when my 73S was picked for the '40 years of 911' line up and as a result I got to do two days of Parade Lap on the Daytona track.

    Cap,
I didn't see any of the parade laps when I was at Daytona, BUT... People WERE talking about a particularly loud early 911 that would wait for a nice gap in the line then HAMMER-IT to the cheers of the spectators.... any confessions? ...

    Thanks John,
Not sure who THAT guy was...but it sure looks like he's pointing at the tail...
By THAT time poor Joe Hartman was already on a respirator...
Since then I've kidded Joe about it... He's really a nice guy...

    Curt,
    I-hear-dat-bud...

    Chuck,
That wasn't me at Daytona with the lead shoe. I will admit that not everything I have done has been entirely conducive to my eternal salvation. But at Daytona I behaved myself.
