    '73 VIN plate question

Forgive me if this question seems a little naïve.

A ’73 MFI car that I’m looking at has the adhesive VIN plate on the driver’s door jamb as below:

This is the same type of adhesive VIN on my SC. Is this the original ‘plate’ that a ’73 came from the factory with, or is it a sign that the car has in fact been repainted & a newer style replacement VIN plate added? For some reason it doesn’t look ‘right’ to me, but I have nothing to compare with.

    thanks

This is the sticker that was placed on cars as part of the Federalizing (DOT) process when they were brought into the US to be sold at a dealership. I think it should also have the aluminum tag in the front of car by the trunk latch, but I am not sure about that.

    Thanks Brian.

The tag doesn’t look very ‘German’.

I’m waiting for more info from the seller regarding originality of the paint etc.

    Gotta love that aubergine!

That tag also looks just like the one on my 73.5 T. The PO was careful enough to mask it off when they changed the color from Signal Yellow to Red.

Hmmm… just noticed that the early911s website claims that this VIN # is a ’73.5 T, although this car definitely has MFI.

Hmmm, I'm confused. Fromthe web site : http://membres.lycos.fr/pfremy/lesnum1a.htm

    they show for "1973 (F Serie) "

    911 Since To
    911 T Coupé US 911-310-0001 to 911-310-1252
    911 T Targa US 911-311-0001 to 911-311-0781
    <snip "for T's only">
    911 T Coupé 911-350-0001 to 911-350-1875
    911 T Targa 911-351-0001 to 911-351-1541

yet my CIS T has a serial number of 911-311-2054 that does not show up in this list.

Maybe both websites are incomplete. I have the redbook at home.

The French site might be showing the MFI T #'s only, omitting the CIS ones?
