    Early S spoiler introduction

I have a European 911S that I am sorting out to be able to get a discounted insurance rate by having everything original. So the RS bumper has to go and I need to purchase an original to put back on. So I need to verify what is correct.

I have been offer a spoiler type bumper that I thought was only introduced in 1972. The seller claims (and he seems very knowledgeable) that these spoilers were installed on European cars starting in 1970. They arrived in North America in 1972.

Can any one verify this fact?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't think so. All of the pictures of cars racing in '71 show the spoiler-less bumper, including factory cars. I don't think that the research that led to the '72 bumper had even been done yet. Your friend's claim, at the least, is in conflict with both Frere and Ludvigsen.

Encourage your seller to produce some proof in pictures that he's right in his claim.

    Bob,

The S spoiler was an 'E' Series (1972) option... ('F' Series is '73)

Production usually started in Sept. after their August vacation... so there would be a new 'S' spoiler on a new 1972 car in Sept. '71 ... not before

Knowing that the Kremer Bros. did VERY innovative mods to their race cars... It wouldn't be surprising if THEY were the first to try a front splitter/spoiler on a pre '72 911 ... like being the first to put fender extensions (flares) on...

    Hope this helps,

    I agree...worldwide, the 1972 model year.

    Thanks guys,

It looks like you have saved me from making an incorrect purchase.
I will still give them the opprotunity to prove us all wrong.

In the mean time I am now looking for a 1970 front bumper.
Anyone have one in good shape?

    Best regards,

Good luck in your search for a good front bumper. Oddly enough the 72on S bumper is still available from Porsche, but not the standard bumper.
