    Pertronix on early bosch distributors

Pertronix apparently doen not "technically" make a fit for cars <74, although I hear of many running this set-up. I have a set for my 68L and I see no reason why it will noy work, although it looks as if a bit of work will need to be done do the points base plate to allow them to fit (this is on a two piece points dist.). What has been done for mounting and how have you set the timing/phase/dwell of the new pick up? Any pictures or accurate illustrations would be great. I have recently upgraded with an MSD 6A unit with MSD coil, and magnacore wires. Seems that the points will be a limiting factor with the rest of the HOT items in the ignition set-up now. Thanks for any info.

Tom, tell me more. I have a '66 with a vintage Mark 10 box. It connects to the coil using a pair of red and green plastic pieces. There is a resistor or transistor connected to the coil as well. I know nothing about the system except I understand its purpose is to gain hotter spark and minimize the tendency of the early cars to oil foul plugs. Should I get rid of the system? Any info you can provide will be appreciated.

I had talked to the local pertronix dealer who show that the book lists only 72 and later 911s and 71 Ts. So any Bosch with vacuum advance but not the early (65-70) cars. Looked at a few that had modified the points plate to accept this and I plan on doing it, although looks like phasing it may be a bit fussy. Guess Ill give her a try and see. I hear Jerry Woods has a plate kit for this, although have to send it in...I would like to do it myself if possible.

If the book is wrong and they do now make a direct fit...great problem solved!

    Pertronix

    MJ,
call Bill Hoke at Pertronix 1 800 827 3758. He'll need the Bosch series number (mine is 0231 159 002), and the unit number, (JFDR 6) and the direction of rotation. Yup, some place in the late 60's/early seventies the rotation changed.

He built and installed a unit in my 1967 911s -002 distributor for the 2 ltr.

About a year ago, on this list, he was recommended as the in-factory contact. Figure about $100, to do a custom install.

    Thanks Bob, Tom:

I will give them a call this am and see what they have. The dizzy for the 68 is the 0 231 159 002 as it is for the L, although may be nice to install one in the 67S as well. The one that I have in hand right now and was suggested for me is the 1867. They said that I will need to customize the points base and tap some new holes. No problem doing this, although do not know WHERE the hole need to go.
