Thread: Chassis dolly info.

    Chassis dolly info.

I had originally planned on stripping the underside, wheel wells, engine and trunk compartments, by hand, where I currently have my car parked. Last night however I decided that I would rather send this out for walnut blasting and use my time for working on more interesting parts.

Now I need to build a dolly for the chassis that will allow me to roll it around and onto a flat bed trailer.

Does anyone have some drawings for a dolly? I need something that will support the chassis with no suspension. It will need to fasten to the chassis so I can safely transport it on a trailer about 10 miles.

Any designs or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I made my trolley from 50mm square tube, it has castors at every corner so is easy to manouever. I strap the shell to the trolley, and the shell to the trailer.

The key to that comment is "correctly supported." I have a car on a dolly with the motor still in it. When the dolly is in the position that I want, I place a jack stand and shims under the motor. I've measured the door gaps at all different stages and the car will relax a little in Nick's and my situation, especially with a motor and trans.

As far as diagonally level, that is important too. Not all of us have a Celette frame jig, but with some attention paid, disaster can be avoided. YMMV

My trolley is just for transport and early assembly work. The shell was restored on a Celette jig

Those things are built hell for stout, aren't they?

    Thanks for the replies.

Although the Celette jig would be a great asset to the project I think that it is a smidge to large to consider at this time.

Nick's dolly on the other hand is the route that I think I will take.

Building one won't be a problem.

Getting the car up on it will be.

My car has the rear suspension removed and is on jackstands at the outer spring plate bushing housing.

How do you guys get your car bodies up this high to place the dolly underneath?

    Regards,

    Bob

I lift the car in stages ending up with the jack stands on top of massive wood blocks. Same with the jack. You are only limited to the amount of wood you have.

Ever seen a house jacked up?

A bare shell is surprisingly light. I can lift one end on my own to transfer between my dolly and the rotisserie
