    Engine Stand

I'm going to need an engine stand for an early 911 motor and would also like it to be able to bolt up a 356 case as well. Are the generics units (ie. inexpensive) satisfactory for these applications? Or, is there something out there which is more specific to flat sixes and fours as opposed to "one size fits all"?

    Thanks for any input,
    Jim

Most generic stands are JUNK! Sir & Baum tools sells a nice repro of the factory stand. It's a 2 piece unit, and cost about $300 for both pieces. Then you have to have a base built for it.
Then there is a adapter plate that is heavy duty that is on the market that bolts up to a generic stand. That's not to bad a idea, but these motors weigh about 400 lbs. and need to be secure. The adapter plate I think is about $149, and worth it. That and a generic stand will work Ok for a hobbiest.
My favorite stand is a OTC unit I bought 25 years ago for about $275, and bought the adapter from Stoddard. The problem with the factory unit, is that it won't bolt up to the engine case without removing the crossover exhaust pipe. If you are doing a complete rebuild, then you would remove the complete exhaust before you took the engine out. Then the factory stand works great. I did a reseal on a 79 SC motor this week, and forgot to take the crossover pipe off before I took the motor out and it was already on the floor. Geeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!

    Rick,

Is the engine holder (you wrote of) pictured in the link below? If I understand correctly, you adapted this holder to a generic type of stand....is that correct? I guess that one could also use the bench mount for this unit, but I would think that the bench would have to be the "industrial strength" variety, eh?

    Thanks for your input,
    Jim

The engine stand I spoke of as a factory unit for about $300, is the one you showed me at $495. Here is a picture of adapting that stand to a generic motor stand.
What I was talking about was the Stoddard adapter bolted to a complete generic stand including the generic head. I will post a picture of that tomorrow.

I bought a generic stand and the 911 adapter from Pelican. There was nothing wrong with the stand, except the diameter of the cylinder into which the adapter fits was too small. The auto parts store would not take the stand back. Long story.

So the best thing to do would be to have the adapter first. It's expensive, but worth it. Then take it to an auto parts store to make sure it will fit into the generice stand.

I don't know how the 356 engine engine would work with all this.

Thanks Rick & Charlie for your input. I'm clear on what pieces are required to assemble a suitable stand. Now a question for you SoCal folks: Two or three years ago there was a guy at Dunkel Bros. who offered a nifty engine stand. His company was GAVCO - Hamilton Ave. in Huntington Beach. Anyone know if this outfit still exists?

    Thanks,
    Jim
