    71 911S Mirrors Question

    Hi all,

I'm new to the site and I love it. My dad and I are both big enthusiasts.

We are currebtly working on the finishing touches on a 71 S targa and I was hoping to get the correct mirrors as a present for my dad.

I've looked around and I can't seem to find definitive information if the 71S targa has 1 mirror or two. We're in the US, but the car was actually sold in Germany when it was new.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    -Scott

The 71 car was fitted with just one mirror on the driver's door, a round "Durrant" mirror (still available new) . These mirrors will be useless if placed symmetrically on the passenger door

    Hi Scott and welcome.

We have a '71S Targa also with chassis #0226, which car do you have? Be sure to post some photos of it when you are done.

I always thought the placement of the mirror on the passenger side way up on the front fender (so you could actually use it) was kind of cool. Any photos out there of that set up?

    Thanks guys!

I found the mirror from tweeks (someone I've ordered from a few times). However, it's on backorder. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks again,
    -S

    Scott,

While I have never bought one of the mirrors from Tweeks, you might want to do a search here (or Rennlist or Pelican) on the quality of these mirrors. Also, I do not know where you are but you might want to try Gary at Parts Obsolete (www.partsobsolete.com).

    Mirrors for 1971 911

Peter Morgans book states that 1971 is the last modelyear that Porsche stayed with the Durant mirror. There is also stated that this was not the case for all countries. Because of government regulations Porsche delivered the rectangular mirror already a couple of years before 1972.

So both the Durant and the rectangular mirror are "period correct". This is the reason why our 1971 911T will be equipped with the rectangular ones because they provide a better view.

    With kind regards,

    Sander de Bruin

My '71 T has the rectangular mirrors on it for what it's worth.
