Funniest vanity plate I ever saw: PUTSOUT
It was on a Viper. I was amazed that Oregon issued it.

    Back in the day

"22" represented the 22nd most populated county in the state - Putnam County.

"D" was the code for passenger vehicle, < 2,500 lbs.

Here in "The Sunshine State", one can register and display a vintage tag like this one provided it is the same year as the model year of the vehicle it's registered to, and provided the condition of the tag meets with the DMV's approval.

I remember those well. You got a new plate every year, in a new color combo. We liked to keep the prisoners in Raiford busy in those days. And you could tell at a glance where someone was from, just by looking at the plates. Dade county (Miami, or as the locals said, Miamuh) was always 1. The whole thing ended when Jacksonville, who was always number 2, decided to incorporate the whole county, making them number 1 overnight. That set off a huge fight in the legislature, Miami thought it was all just a dirty trick just to take the "1" from them. They couldn't settle, so they ended up doing away with that whole numbering scheme and going to a different layout.

The other big stink I remember is when they came out with the first commemorative plates, after the Challenger shuttle disaster. The plates had an image of the space shuttle blasting off against a blue sky with "Challenger" at the bottom. The proceeds were to go to a Challenger memorial. But they were also one of the first vanity type of plates offered there, so some doofus ordered one of them with "KABOOM" on it. They'd put some rules in against profanity and such on the new vanity plates, but not bad taste, so after some back and forth they had to issue it to him....

I had this one until about a year ago. Sorry the photo isn't more clear; it says "MFI". I gave it up to put an original '72 plate on it with an original '72 tab still intact.
