Spacers for a Little More Stance.

Most info I've researched on the subject relates to flared cars with wide wheels. I'm interested in getting a TOUCH more aggressive stance on my 73.

Running the original shallow 6es and 195/65 tires, don't want to go to 7s, and don't want to roll lips. Just want a little more offset (between 1/2" and 1") purely for aesthetic reasons. May go to deep 6s and 7Rs sometime down the road (when that big bonus comes through)... but they don't add any offset either. No track time planned, but may do some DE days next year.

Has anyone added spacers to do this? Any increased vibration at speed? Any specific insight/recommendations on brand and ideal size for this scenario would be much appreciated.

    I'm no expert, but maybe

205/60/15's would give you a wider look w/o adding the spacers. I'm pretty certain your car ('73) can handle this width with no problems.

Thnx Sacto, I thought of that option... but 205s tend to look a bit overtire-d on 6" wheels I've seen. Too much bulge in the sidewall section. I'd rather get the wheel out there a bit. I know, I'm a picky SOB.

    Jared,

On the Targa I have deep sixes on the front with 5 mm spacers and 7R wheels on the rear with 18 mm spacers. The front spacers were already on the car with the flat sixes so I just left them on. I have no handling or vibration problems but I do have an occasional tire rub on the left rear. I also have a set of 15 mm spacers so I will put those on this Spring and see if that helps with the rubbing. Sometime over the Summer I will change out the shocks and have the ride height improved all the way around.

... and considering that the 'correct' tire size is 185/70, throwing a 205/60 on is a bit aggressive.

Never mind that a 911 with 205/60 tires on 6 inch rims would be illegal in Germany - what do the Germans know about 911s

Without changing out your wheel studs, or going to an adapter rather than a spacer, you are limited to about a 7mm max. (1/4") spacer before you lose safe thread engagement on the lugnuts. Using an adapter is frowned upon in tech with most organizations, so if you are planning on running DEs, don't do that. This means you can only gain about 1/2" of track width without going to a bunch more trouble.

After you add up the cost of changing out the studs and buying the spacers, you may find that putting the 23mm offset 7x15s on is really the best solution. They will stick out 1" further outboard than your 6s, and with 205/60-15 tires they will work and look really nice.

Thanks for the info, I don't want to change studs, and prefer the look of the 6 style rims on early cars. Brian, your targa wheel offset looked great when I saw it in Indiana - it's what got me thinking about spacers. Are you running longer studs for the 18mm spacers?

I used the 7mm spacers with the stock studs and have enough thread
to feel comfortable with the stock wheel nuts. I just didn't feel like
my 8" rears really filled out the RS flares. Here's how it looks:

    Jared,

Those are adapters. I didn't want to go through the hassle of longer studs and I wanted to have the ability to change back to stock easily. Since I have no desire to do any track events w/ the Targa, using the adapters was no problem.

Harvey W. suggested between 15 to 18mm for the R wheels and refered me to Ralph Boothe for the adapters. Here is a link to his site. Very high quality stuff. I have no idea what the cost would be to put longer studs on.
