Barn Find Story - American Special w/2.0 S

Just found and bought this - Early 1960's one off, sports race car, built and raced by a Chicago area Porsche dealer, multiple victories, originally ran a 4 cam motor, refitted with a 2.0S. Still researching all of the details, been in storage for many years.

Great find Mark, Very cool. Looks like you may be the new local autocross champ with that machine!

    Best,

Good call, it was an autocross car for several years after retirement from road racing.

    Mark-
I expect to see you at PIR next summer driving this car, and wearing the goggles evident in the picture above!

    Very interesting...

Is it open behind the seats to allow for engine cooling?

Any data re weight and horsepower? It sure looks fast

Yes, very interesting. It has a certain Ol' Yeller quality to it.

It does come with aluminum flares and a cowl to cover the front part of the engine. The wheels on the car now are wider than the stock originals, so it will go back to the original.

I'm having it shipped to Emory's and it will be gone through 100% and then plan to vintage race it. May switch back to 4 cyl. depending on handling. If nothing else it should win the ugly duckling award.

    That's very cool...

I probably saw this car run in the midwest when I was a kid! I used to go to Meadowdale in Carpentersville for SCCA and other club events, and this car looks familiar.

The suspension is interesting... looks like a swing arm setup turned back to front... can you post more photos?

Sure, Note the brake drums are set inboard to reduce weight on the corners. I've seen this set up on Lotus XI's before, don't know how common it was in other makes.
