Thread: 7x15 Fuchs 911 "R" rims tire sizes?

  1. #1

Question 7x15 Fuchs 911 "R" rims tire sizes?

    Hi Folks,
I am about to put 7x15 R rims on my narrow body 72T. With an offset of 49mm these rims should allow me to use some wider tires. Does anybody have any experience with these rims?
    Thanks for your help!
    Stefan
P.S. I am going to use them in the front and rear! Also I have no idea which spacers to use!?

I have heard that the factory used a 1/4" spacer (well, the factory used a milimeter spacer ) to keep the inside of the tire off the bolts on the spring plate. It would seem to me tho be a case by case issue due to differing tire widths and camber settings. Some 225/50/15's are narrower at the bulge than others.

Turns out that Harvey Weidman is probably going to reccommend that I use a 7.75 inch rear with the R offset that he can make. No spacer required, and thus, not much worry at the fender lip as long as it's rolled and I have about 2 degrees neg camber. YMMV, and so will mine due to body abberations.

    Thanks Zeke,
how about the fact that you need to use tubes on these rims!? Is there still a tire manufaturer out there that makes 225/50 15s that will run with tubes?

Stefan - you don't need to use tubes with 7R wheels.

Many (most?) people - myself included - run them with tubeless tyres.

I have deep sixes with 205/55 (front) & 7R with 225/50 (rear) Dunlop ZR-rated tyres on my RS-engined '71 Targa.

Right. It was explained to me that the vavle stem hole on the deep 6's and R wheels was more of the problem than the fact that the rim did not have the safety bead inside. Todays tires are stronger and if the pressure is kept up to normal. it shouldn't slip off the rim. The valve stem issue can be addressed with a threaded steel valve stem, straeded aluminum stem or some machining.

Remember to tell the tire mounter that the tires go on from the backside on the deep 6's. I would look at the R's to see how that works. Whichever edge the deep mounting groove is closest to, is the side you go from.

....interesting! But how about if I am flying the Nürburgring and at 240 km/h I am loosing a tire because I should have used tubes! Anyhow, what size tire was used on the "R" originaly? Does anybody know? 225/50 sounds like one of those low profile setups which I am not realy in favour of! The profile should look close to a 185/70 tire in my oppinion!

Stefan - in 1967 there were no 'low profile' road tyres available !

According to the 911R Diver's Manual (Handbook), the car was originally supplied with the same size tyres for both front & rear wheels - 185 HR x 15".

Bear in mind though that these would be switched to the owner's preferred brand of race tyre.

As for wishing to keep close to the look of the 185/70x15 tyres, you could fit 215/60x15 on the rear - this is the front/rear combination that was originally fitted to the '73 RS Carrera (whether on 6&7's or 7&8's).

    Incidentally, here's a picture of the 205/55 (F) 225/50 (R) combination on my Targa:

    Stefan,

FWIW On our Targa, I put 195/65 tires on the front deep sixes and 215/60 tires on the rear 7R wheels. I also have 15 mm spacers for the 7R wheels which work very nicely. I had 18 mm spacers on the rears before but that caused rubbing on the left rear tire.

I don't have tubes either, but I haven't had the car on Nurburgring either.

...nice car Andy! Any pixs showing the tires from the rear? Or do you have any Brian (from the side and rear)?
    Thanks,
