Thread: Shift Coupler

    Shift Coupler

I need to replace the bushings on my shift coupler. There are several options. I could replace the factory bushings, upgrade with aftermarket bushings, replace with factory coupler or upgrade with aftermarket.

For a small part there seems to be a lot of choices and I am wondering if the additional cost is worth it.

    Earl,

For me, I went with factory replacement bushings and it was a significant improvement. Didn't really investigate too much, I just had Mike put them in and adjust as needed.

    Hello Earl,

I am very sorry to hear about this.
Unfortunately this minor component failure is only the tip of the iceburg.
When the coupler goes bad typically it means the transmission has failed too.
Vibrations from the misaligned coupler causes massive internal damage to the gearbox rendering the entire unit worthless. If this is not caught immediately, the engine will be destroyed as well.

I suppose you can try a new coupler, but be prepared for a full mechanical overhaul and/or replacement of all drive train components.

p.s. Call me when it comes in and we'll get it shifting better than ever.

I get it now, the shift coupler is also directly works in harmaney with the muffler bearings, when these fail it stops rainy, then your wife will not love you any more. Hurry up and get on it, there is more at stake then just finding gears when you shift, which is all I have ever noticed, BTW I vote for factory bushings ,Fritz

    Fritz,

Not true. Everyone knows that a failed Kuhneutson Valve is the real culprit.

    .

Fortunately this link will take to an outfit that can provide a high quality Forged Kuhneutson Valve.

I've used the round holed bushings vs. the elongated ones and found that it's just that much tighter a feel. Minor surgery and $20 or so. Make sure the front bushings are tight too.

People swear by the Stomski coupler with zeeero play. At $180 I guess that you'd never have to worry about them again.
