Newbie Help-- What to look for

So a buddy of mine from high school had a beautiful 1969 912 -- I've always wanted something similar to it. Now that I've settled into the career track, I finally have some discressionary funds for a fun second car. I'd love to get either a 911 or 912 from the late 60s or early 70s.

Where's a good place for information as to what to look for and eventually buy??

    thanks!

You should check out Ebay. Lots of good, reliable info and perfectly preserved cars.

Seriously though, to find a good source of info, come up with a good question, then go up to the top of this page and throw a couple of key words at the search funtion. If nothing comes up, either it wasn't a good question, or your keywords were wrong. If you really have no success, post the question and you will have lots of good, reliable info (and a few sarcastic comments like this one) within a few hours.

    Be patient and good luck.

For some good basic information on the different 911 models, see this link.

i disagree... ebay is russian rulette. good cars come up occasionally but many times they arent as good as they appear. if anythng, ebay is a good learning tool. you can see different examples, ask questions about em.. find out whats good or not.. correct or not, and most importantly you can start to discover what to look for and what not to look for.

    LG,
Perhaps everyone on this board is being kind to our 912 brothers but all things being equal, in particular the amount of $ you have to spend, I would suggest that you go for a 911 instead of a 912. Once you sit in an early sports car shaped like a 911, you are going to want to drive it hard and fast - and the 911 offers two extra cylinders in which to do this. Plus the cost of body work, elecrtrical work, wheels, interior, etc is all going to be similar between the 911 and 912 except for the engine, so why not get maximum driving pleasure out of what you are paying for...
If you are simply looking to enjoy a mellow Sunday drive, there is the 2.2 liter 1970-71 911T with only 110 hp that will easily do the job. After a few months of driving it though, you will want more hp...

Nice catch Andy, yes Harry m' boy, my tongue was inserted firmly in cheek on the Ebay comment. Your comments on Ebay are right though, there are good cars there, but know what you are doing before buying one.

    the 2.2 liter 1970-71 911T with only 110 hp
    The 1970/71 T has 125 hp - unless your 1970 T has a 1968 motor

    Tim,
You are right. Sorry for the misinfo. Must have been the 2.0 liter T's with 110 hp. Regardless, no one buys a 911T (whether it be 110hp or 125hp) for the purpose of hi gh speed early 911 driving...
