    Chassis/Engine Numbers

What is the quickest-to-access source to determine whether chassis and engine numbers match?
    1973 911 S Targa (Black/Black) SOLD
    1999 996 C2 (Silver/Black) SOLD
    2006 Range Rover Sport (Red/Tan)
    2004 Mercedes E320 4MATIC Wagon
    1971 Mercedes 280SL

If you only want to check to see if the VIN number matches the engine number, there are books. One publication I use is "Porsche Family Tree", published by PCA. Inexpensive, but full of info. Enough to tell which car the VIN is, and whether than engine number belongs in that type of car. As far as exact match...the "did this car get built with the engine now in it?" thing? Tom is right...Kardex.
