Thread: Removing VIN Tag for painting?

    Removing VIN Tag for painting?

I will soon be stripping the body of my car and got to thinking of the VIN tag at the front.

I would like to remove it so that I can properly repaint around and underneath it.

Is there something that I should be concerned about if I do this?
Is this the ultimate violation of the car?
Or can I take it off do the job right and replace it?

    Any thought would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    VIN Number

    Bob:

I will not do that , it is better to leave the VIN Plate intact and mask it in order to preserve the cars originality , moreover I have seen cars with the Vin Plate changed and they not look original and then people starts to ask if there was a hit in that particular zone .

    My .002 cents .

In most cases, the proper rivets are hard to find. I don't know about Porsche. I'm sure the high end restorers remove the plates and remount them in a fashion that would never lead you to suspect.

I know the GM rivets were a flower shape and we used to file common pop rivets to match with jewlers files.
