    Radio Mounting Question

How were the Blaupnkts (specifically the Frankfurt) mounted in the early 70's cars- directly through the dash and the dash vinyl or with a faceplate (in other words: is there one big hole for the unit that is framed with a faceplate or is there one hole for the actual radio and separate small holes for each dial (as the look of the finished installation)?

My 73 has a large rectangular hole. The Frankfurt slides in from the front and clamps in with 2 clip brackets that attach to the sides of the radio. Once radio is secure (incl. rear support strap), the 3 hole vinyl trim piece (metal backed) is placed onto the aluminum trim channel (over the radio) with adhesive. The knobs go on last.

I thought the vinyl covered piece would have slid in from the side - but there's no way I could see to do it since the radio is a front-load mount.

The standard DIN single rectangular hole began in 1969. The earlier cars (my '66 and a '68 I once owned) had smaller cut-out for the dial and 2 separate circular holes for the posts/knobs. Modern units will fit '69 and later.

The radio pic is PWD72's Irish Green car - the underdash pic is of a completely unmolested 73T I saw a few months ago out in Western MI - I was looking for the same radio mount info you are.
My ride is silver/blk (orig. color), sport seats, sunroof, ltd. slip. Don't need much of an excuse to post a pic:

    Sharp car!

Great pic- I love that you have deleted the BU (butt ugly) 73 bumper warts! I have thought about doing that on mine- I really hate the way they look. Did you drop yours yourself or was it a big project in any way?

Easy to remove, but you'll need to replace the rubber trim strip with a one piece and may need to repaint the bumper. I also replaced the US rear bumperettes with chrome, but they don't look too bad on your black car.
