    Targa Window Stop

One of my winter projects is to replace the small rubber window stops that are located at the top of the vent frames. Hopefully you can see it in this photo:

I ordered replacement parts from Pelican and received the following parts:

To use this part I would have disassemble the window frame, drill out a rivet and then tap 4 new mounting holes.

My questions are 1.) do I have the right parts and 2.) if this is the right part, would I be better off taking the frames to a machine shop to have the drilling and tapping done? Or is there another way to get this done that I ammissing?

Thanks for any and all help.

    Window Stop. Noooo!

    Hi Hall,

These pieces are not the stops for the window.
The upper stops for the windows are attaced to the inside door skin approximately half way across the base of the window.

These stops can creep over the years and allow the window to be cranked too high. This tears the little rubber piece that you want to replace.

Since these are expensive and time consuming to replace make sure that you adjust the real stop for the window so you don't damage your new rubber.

Bob, thanks for the reply. And you are of course correct in saying that the rubber parts are not stops.

That said, does the part I received from Pelican appear to be correct? To fit it to my car, I will have to drill out a piece that is riveted in place and then tap 4 new mounting holes, and find the proper sized screws.

    Hal,

I have a pair of these to replace myself. The ones I have look exactly like yours. I have chrome plated screws at the tops of my frames but am unsure what is holding the the tab inside the window channel as i have not removed the fuzzy yet.

I will be doing this job myself in a couple of weeks and can let you know how it goes.

    Good luck.

Bob, I have gone so far as to take the frame apart and I too have no idea what the screws do. However, under the fuzzy you will find that the early piece is welded (riveted?) to the frame. That s the part of the job that has me most concerned and thinking about taking it to a machine shop.

Any and all experience you gain, please passit my way and I'll do the same.

I have recently completed this job myself on a 73 S Targa.

Rubber end is held in place by two copper rivets on the vertical frame and by two chromed screws on the top of the window frame. New screws are available from Stoddards in one of their screw kits as the original brass ones often break on removal (presents further problems then, so go slowly)

I had no real trouble in replacing the copper rivets as they don't have to finish up exactly flush with the frame but do need to be tapped with a ball and peen hammer or similar to make sure the rivet spreads far enough to hold the clip securely in place.

Getting the frame out and apart is a lot harder than the job ahead of you and yes make sure the window staps are in place otherwise you will split the rubbers again quickly

    Good luck
