    Fender hardware mounting question

    Hi,

To make it easier on my restorer, I have been buying my own parts. It makes him happy that he doesn't have to go chasing for parts and I can save a little money.

It's almost time to finally reinstall the front fenders so I bought a couple of fender hardware kits from Stoddard. I have to say that the quality was not very impressive. I think for the $25 a bag that Stoddard charges, the parts should be 100% correct. They sent yellow cad plated washers with steel sheet metal screws. Not exactly a great color combo, nor does it seem correct. It can be argued that the factory painted most of the bolts so the color shouldn't really matter but that is not an option in this case.

My main question is... does it matter that they sent sheet metal screws for the vertical fender mounting? My restorer (confirmed by PET) says that they should be metric M6 x 20. Will using sheet metal screws make a difference besides being incorrect?

Do any of our resident restorers have any opinions on the matter?

    THANKS!
    Neil

The vertical, as you call them , are indeed cap screws, not sheet metal screws. So are the 2 found inside the door jamb at the top. And, I believe there may be one threaded screw at the very front in the trunk. Or, maybe it's outside behind the front bumper. (You'd think I'd know, I just bolted my fender back on 2 days ago.)

I don't think you could even seat a sheet metal screw in the inner fender supports. Your guy is right. Keep him.

AFA the plating, they were painted over. But, if you're anal like me, you will look for some gold ones. Now, here's what I did: I placed a want ad on Pelican for some fender bolts and screws and had 2 people offer to send me all I needed. Fiber washers, carpet snaps, the whole kitandkaboodle. I have them in parts cleaner right now.
