Thumbs up 911R roll bar pics

I am interested in pics of the factory style early rollbars as fitted to the 911R and maybe later ST's. I have see images on the pbase/911R site but wonder if the simple hoop with 2 rear struts is all Porsche fitted for racing ?

harness attachment points also appear to be onto the rear shelf, but again comments and pics are sought. I am aiming for authenticity rather than perfromance/safety from the roll bar.

Heres a pic of what I think it should look like.

    Hoop

Thats it.. Thats all porsche fitted at the time... the later roll Hoops (ie, ST, RSR) had a cross diagonal bar from the large radius of the hoop to one of the bottom legs.

I recall seeing somewhere that TRE makes a really nice repro R roll bar, FWIW.

Dave B. at TRE does make a good roll bar… I put one in my car

The one I bought did not have it's cross diagonal from the large radius of the hoop to one of the bottom legs, like Robert explains about the factory original, but the cross diagonal goes from the center of the main hoop to the leg… which makes for a much stronger bar... AND, more 'Tec Friendly' at events. A down side is it puts the diagonal right in the middle of the rear view mirror view…. However I got use to it right away.

The other thing is that the bar I bought was from a batch that Dave had made to a sun-roof spec… Therefore it mounted a little low for my taste… so I had a fabricator friend extended the main hoop legs about 2" … after that the bar was perfect.

I would check with Dave on what the latest batch's specs are …Dave's bars come with weldment plates and all the hardware for installation.

    Cheers

Thanks Dave. It looks like the correct bar has the rear supports with crimped ends, drilled to attach and pick up on rear seat belt points. Several pics I have seen show this attachment rather than a flat or angle iron plate bolted to the side of the rear seat area.

As Chuck says, some later ones had the diagonal brace (as per yr pic) but it interferes with the rear mirror (but knowing Chuck he doesnt care about what's behind him anyway). Have also seen some with a short horizontal bar behind drivers seat between upright and diagonal to attach harnesses to.

I was wondering too about harness attachment points on rear parcel shelf area and any shots of how factory cars were set up. Anything in yr pic library to show this ??

    Thanks for your help anyway.

    911R experts pls comment

I have attached a couple of pics of the shell of the '67 car I am building into the "R" replica. You can see a variety of old seat belt attachment points with welded in plates. (yeah I know, extra weight !). But it appears there is a factory placed seat belt mount point to which roll bar supports have been bolted to.

Does anyone else concure with this assumption?

There is an obvious flat area to bolt the upright foot plate to which I will use and is eveident in many pics or R's and ST's.

Also was thinking about mounting a flat bar between the 2 mount points across the rear shelf as harness mount points. Authentic enough do you think ??

Phil, here's a shot from Rennsport Daytona. You can see the bolt and bracket mount. I'd use just the factory eyebolt seatbelt anchor. More genuine.

Same location in an ST. They used a harness bar here but you can see the eyebolt on the rear deck.

    Hi Jens,

thanks for yr pics and comments.

My shell doesnt have the eyebolt mount as per the ST pics you posted. Just the 2 welded on plates visible on the rear seat backs. I thought that 2 separate anchor points would be stronger as per the pic below (I think from an ST ?). Seems from all the pics I have seen, everyone has a different idea. perhaps more safety minded than way back in '67 ??
