    901 Question

I know several on this board have increased the output of their early SWB 911s, i.e. Eric and Howard. Did you modify/change the original 901 transmission at all to better handle the increased power of the 2.7? Can a stock 901 handle additional hp/torque? Up to a certain level? I am considering increasing the capacity of the 2.0 and wondering if I need to do anything to the transmission. Thanks.

I don't know the full answer but a buddy of mine is running a hot rodded 2.7 L in his 914. His stock 901 tranny seems to be holding together.

FWIW, my 901 works great on my LWB. Of course, in 1970, they went with a bigger fly wheel. I have a 3.0 with Webers, Bursch headers, and a 20/21 cam. Experts have told me HP ratings should be anywhere from 240 to 260 HP, probably closer to 240. Lots of torque, too.

A mechanic I use (30+ years and P-factory trained in Germany) told me a 901 can handle well in excess of 400 hp for what it's worth. Disclaimer: I suspect a 901 tranny with that much hp attached to it will have had some serious tinkering done with the innards. The only real downside to the 901 was the distaste for the dogleg 1st gear from what I understand.

    901 tranny

Hello; The 901 will handle the power of a 2.7 race engine with no problem if it is good condition. make sure the diff. bearings are in good shape and the pinion depth is correct as well as the backlash. I have run these gearboxs in 911&914-6 and a 3.0 twin plug engine with about 250 hp. With no problems. I would suggest a limited slip. Thanks Eric
