    Through Grill Lights opinions Please

    Early Guys,

What is your opinion on this set up?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=34207

Whilst I understand they are not original, they appeal to me as my car will never be a concourse beauty and I'm not too stressed about the not period correctness.

My H1's need a boost - this looks like an affordable solution whilst looking like it is original.

Thoughts - quality - price any comments welcomed

    Thanks

    Shane

    Through the grill lights

If you are looking to boost your H-1 headlights, these will not do it. They look like fog light lenses and, consequently, will not add very much illumination. You may want to consider adding driving lights. I haven't seen the lights posted on ebay, however, the developer seems to have devised his own mount by attaching directly to the horn grill. That being the case it would not be as stable as the original brackets that mount on the battery boxes.

Do a search on the seller over on Pelican. He has posted extensively on the development of these mounts, their design, etc. I'm no engineer, but they seemed a workable solution to me.

I would first "boost" the H1's with new, maybe thicker wiring, cleaning the grounds, and putting in higher wattage bulbs with relays.

If that doesn't work, I'd go with Litronics. Another benefit is that their more whitish light will reflect better from signs and from the eyes of miscellaneous marsupials you encounter.

The problem with mounting more lights on the hood is that they greatly increase drag. The only reason you would need to boost H1s is that you are going way fast. Thus, drag will be a big concern for you.

    All thanks...

Randy - your right!! I will have trouble getting past the inspectors a LeMans this year,

In any case looks like wiring and a bulb replacement may be the first sensible upgrade..

Really ... I wanted an excuse to set up these to look cool.. but reality (and Randy) have made me consider the other option. Thanks I'll post the results

    Thanks again

    Hey Shane,
Those are my lights, my auction. Actually I'm like you in that I like the way they look. I have one car that has the original thru grill lights on it. I liked them so much I tried to buy them for all my other cars. I soon found out how hard they are to find and also how expensive. Thats how I came to these.
I've got them on all my cars now. They are repros, but basically I just love the way they look. Here's a pic of them on my yellow RS type.

They definitely look good - drag or no.

The drag of these can't be as bad as the hood mounted rally lights...I can personally testify that a stock engined 1972 911S is capable of hitting redline in 5th while running no bra, factory through the grill fog lights in place...uh, to allieviate any statute of limitation worries, I'll say that this was done in Nevada before they had a highway speed limit.

"drag can't be as bad as the hood mounted rally lights"

    - I know what you mean, BUT it might actually be worse. Fluid dynamics is tricky stuff... there could easily be a pinch effect between these and the stock headlight/fenders....

No one can say for sure w/o testing.

The top speed is just a balance of hp, gearing, and drag - it doesn't mean there was not a big effect on drag.

BTW, you're safe re the SOL.
