    ID Plate Rivets

Unfortunately, I have to drill out the rivets securing my ID plate to the A pillar in order to remove the vinyl in order to repair some rust at the base of the A pillar ('70E). How can I replace the rivets without having it look like monkey business has been had with the car? Please PM if you think that this kind of information should remain less public.
    Thanks,
    -Scott

Somewhere on Pelican I think there was a long thread on the subject. What you need was found at McMaster-Carr. I would give you a reference but I cannot access Pelican from where I am right now.

I had to drill mine out to replace the windshield frame vinyl trim.

Apparently some idiot, who will remain nameless, sliced it up nicely while cutting out the windshield rubber. It needed replacing anyway after getting some paint on it during "rustoration". Does anybody have any tips on replacing the vinyl?

Scott, if you buy some in bulk, can you send me a couple? I pay for half. I don't think that we both need 100 rivets each.

I finally found the posting at Pelican for the screws for the Paint code plate. They are listed at McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) as "Drive Screws" (see page 3137). They look like this:

I am not sure what is needed for the A pillar VIN code rivets.

Upon further inspection, it is clear that the color code plate and
ID plate don't use the same fasteners. The ID plate is fastened with larger diameter rivets that have a hole in the center. The drive screws would certainly work, but not be completely correct. I'm talking wiht International Merchantile about this. I'll let you all know what I find.
Thanks for all of yor help.

    Paint code/ ID plate rivets

The rivets you saw with the hole in the middle are either pop rivets or CherryMax blind fasteners. I do not believe the factory used either of the fasteners when they built the cars.

    kstens-
Are the "drive screws" cited above the correct fastener for both the color plate and the ID plate? I would be really surprised if mine were not original, but I guess anything's possible.
