    Thanks to Leslie Rice/ Riverside

A big hardy thank you to Leslie Rice for the rememberences of Riverside International Raceway. The most recent article in ESSES's was great.

I had to drive out from the flatlands about 20 years ago to experience the track prior to it's closing. The 911 was just out of the garage from it's multi year restoration, it went to Brainerd for my wife's and my drivers school on the first weekend, did a weeks prep (got rid of the Bursch open exhaust) a realignment and my daughter and I drove the next week to California as a shake down cruise (about 2000 miles). Well worth the trip. And thanks to Leslie I was able to remember with great detail the off-camber, get it right or spin corner (guess who spun...).

    I hear'ya Bob,

It was one of my 3 local tracks ... and I never drove it in anger...what'a loss

These pics are from my 'old and older' thread...

The first - '73 manning the pit board for my buddy...

The next - 16 years later in '89 when I first owned my car...and the track was all but deceased... what'a loss

I'd like to add my dittos to the thanks. I especially enjoyed Lee Rice's (perhaps only his brother can call him Lee? If so, I apologize.) IROC impressions. Back then, I heard a rumor that "King Richard" asked Mark Donahue a question: "Hey Mark, what's this 'heel and toe' you road course guys talk about?" IROC became a joke once it went to the turn left course only set-up. Good marketing on the part of NASCAR, but still a joke. This is not meant to say that today's NASCAR guys can't drive well anywhere. Some can, some can't. I'm saying that the series showed potential until they went to oval courses only. Donahue & Petty were both supermen in their respective venues. I think Donahue demonstrated something in that first series. Why the change to oval only? Probably a "follow the money" thing...

    Turn Six

Turn six and lifting the inside front tire. Yoohoo.

(Boy the car looks strange at stock ride height).

My thanks as well, really brought back some great memories. All I can add is what I experienced everytime I drove the track- the first full day I'd have to practice keeping my foot mashed down on the accelerator in the kink going into turn 9. The car could do it flat out, it was just the driver who had trouble. Usually took me several laps to get that figured out. What a blast.
Here's the old '67 coming out of 6. Picture's in poor shape after all the years, I hope whoever has the car has taken better care of it.
