    matching numbers

Total rookie question here: When ascertaning if numbers are matching between engine and chassis, the numbers typically don't match verbatim, they merely have to be in a very close range per the red book (or am I completely off here)? Is the kardex the only way to know for sure? I couldn't find the answer I was looking for by searching the site.

The books (number range) will tell you if it's the right engine for a particular car's year of build and option designation. You can get fairly close by knowing the month of build compared to where the engine number is in the model year range.

The only way to know if it's the actual engine installed at the factory is through the Kardex (factory records). Exception is the RS series - those particular numbers are well documented for each car.
