Thread: What's your gas mileage??

    What's your gas mileage??

I am trying to figure out what to expect. On the road back from picking up Kermit, I was getting about 15 mpg, but I was driving gingerly. In the fall, I had him tuned up and the MFI adjusted. By that time, I was starting to drive him a lot harder, and I was getting about 9 mpg. WHOOOPS!!!!

So I brought him back to my mechanic this spring, and he leaned it out, and I'm now getting 13.5 mpg with about 50% of the tankful being with the Targa top off, so I am guessing that I am back up to about 15 mpg overall.

What should I really expect for mileage? Someone told me that his Turbo was getting 18 - 20, and with only a 2.4L engine, I should be doing about that. What can I expect ideally? What do you guys get?

That's me...15-18 is about average on one of my "runs"...I could probably top 20 with a change in driving habits.

Same car for 16 years (good baseline)... about the same milage between 2.4S and 2.7RS rebuild...

About 11-13 up in the hills...
About 13-15 mixed driving anound town...
    About 15-17 mixed open highway...

    VERY BEST - a little over 20 ... that's 5th gear under 5000 for a full tank.

    ... and about 9 @ 10/10ths on the track

I guess math works out to just under 15 mpg for all around useage for me...

Anyone who has ridden with Chuck alot knows he keeps gas quantity and mileage notes every time he stops for gas. His figures are undoubtedly accurate and the reference for this stuff. Me.... I figure on 10 mpg with my 2.7RS MFI - anything over is a bonus!

Any contemporary car test of the 911-S that I've seen showed that they never got doodly for gas mileage. Me, I could care less. If for some strange reason I was drugged into believing I needed a Prius I'd just go ahead and shoot myself. I'd rather walk. If it gets that bad I'll ride a motorcycle, however, the best you can hope for (on a real bike, not a bloody scooter!) might be into the high 40's with judicious use of the throttle.
MFI was the best for specific output on these engines but it was a gas "sprayer" too! The EFI systems that evolved for obvious reasons did do a lot better.

What the Hell; have fun. You only go around once.

I am always amazed at the efficiency of the Motronic FI. My 73 gets about 300 miles per fill, while my 2.2 S w/MFI gets slightly over 200!
On the highway, the 2.2 MFI range climbs to about 250 miles, but the 3.2 Motoronic gets close to 400!!
That's as close as I track mileage. My 2.4 with Webers was worse than the MFI BTW>>>

    Tom,

Don't get me wrong. I never anticipated that my 911 was an economy car. But there are only two ways that I can determine if my MFI is adjusted close to correctly. 1. Power; 2. Fuel Economy. What I want is a good blend of both. Pouring extra gas into the engine that it isn't going to burn isn't good for the environment, my pocketbook, nor the engine!!!!

But I didn't buy Kermit for any other reason than fun FUN FUN

I was just curious if my rough tough 13 - 15 was about typical. Seems it is. Might be able to squeeze an mpg or two out if I didn't push on the throttle so damn hard, but . . . . . . What's the fun in doing that????
