Opinion of Wheels for 71' 911E

    Hello Folks,

I'm the new owner of a 1971 911E Targa. (My first Porsche and I love it!) I have a question for you experienced 911 owners. It may be more of an opinion / question.

I have the original 14" x 5.5" Fuchs on the car. I want to purchase different wheels and tires. What is your opinion of a 16" x 6" wheels on a 1971 911? I would have them painted & polished to look like the vintage fuchs of the 60's & early 70's. (sort of like the wheels I have now, just larger) Any thoughts on how this style wheel looks on my car? I know that I can't fit a 16 x 7" wheel with out spacers or flairs. (I'm not altering the body of this car) The only thing I will do is have the car's suspension lowered a little.

I appreciate your thoughts on this or if any of you have this size wheel on your early 911. If you do, I would appreciate if you posted pictures of your car with these wheels.

    Thanks,
    Gavin

Welcome, Gavin... sounds like your E came with the comfort option if it had 14" wheels.

Well, you'll find NO shortage of opinions here!! I definitely do NOT like 16" wheels on early 911s. If for track use, they are tolerable (15" high performance tires are very limited). There's something about the taller sidewall rubber that just looks right in the wheel well. I do think 15x7s look great on early cars. If you want a gutsy-er look, I'd go with deep sixes or 15x7s. How bout some pics??

    - and please anodize, don't polish!

Here is my 70s with the 16x6 anodized and paint detailed. Its not a bad look, but like Jered, I prefer the 15x6 for looks.

Thanks for those pics cornpanzer. Your car looks awesome. I think I prefer the look of a larger wheel. (instead of 15 x 6) I will probably go for the same wheels you have on your car. (anodized & painted)

    Thanks!

    Jared...

It is the "Comfort Group" option.

Gavin English, please make certian that you identify your cars front suspension before you go about purchasing spendy wheel items.

The hydro-pneumatic front struts were very common with 1971 911E cars. Page 37 of an excellent reference book: "The Original Porsche 911, by Peter Morgan". Will provide some insight to this issue.

Most early cars with the 71 hydro-set-up have been converted already. The fact that your car stil has 14" (rather than 15") wheels could indicate that the old set-up may still exist. No worries. Simple fix.

Get back to us and we will asist. Corns' car is hot. No Doubt. You should see JCR's ride, (silver) super sweet as well.

    Shawn.
