Thread: How odd is my ring and pinion?

Question How odd is my ring and pinion?

    Gents,

On one of my 901 boxes I have a 6:29 ring and pinion instead of the "usual" 7:31. How odd is this part? Any idea what was the correct application (912?)? And last, what is the value of it?

    I'm replacing it with a 7:31 soon.

    Cheers, Juan

For one I think its perhaps a cheaper way to get an airport type gearset! It surely explains why I found my engine to be so snappy with my c-ga-ka-q-u gearing....

I obtained a 5-speed to upgrade the factory 4, and it had the 6:29 R&P (4.83:1). I sold it to Carl Young when I upgraded to a 915 so he may have more info. It's more of a hillclimb gearbox. 1st was good for hole shots up to about 15 mph. However, 5th created a little engine buzz; 4000 rpm @ 60mph as I remember. Since it's rare, I would suspect it's worth more than the "run-of-the-mill" 7:31s (4.43:1).

    Hope this helps,
    Sherwood

The Runaway Bride told me your pinion was ok, but she didn't want your ring...
