Thread: Engine at rest?

    Question Engine at rest?

    Hi all,

as I'll not be driving my car for a while (sheet metal work in progress...), I was wondering if it harms the engine that it's just sitting there. I've removed all oil pipes, oil tank etc., but to prevent seizing, do I need to put some oil in through the spark plug holes and turn the crank a few times now and then?

    Thanks for your help!

It never hurts to turn the crank in the proper direction now and then and it never hurts to oil the cylinders. You should plug or tape all ports as some valves will be open no matter where the crankshaft is. Plug those oil lines too.

When you go to restart the motor after a long sleep, there are documented procedures, search for them. One thing you will see is to disconnect the ignition, fuel pump and remove the spark plugs before cranking long enough to build oil pressure.

Dennis, thanks for asking and Zeke thanks for the reply - The same thought has crossed my mind several times in the 6 months the 2.7 RS spec engine has been out of the car. Hopefully it will only be one more until it is back in action!
