I have to echo John's ideals. No pressure, not what the Gruppe was founded for, etc. As a newbie, this is what I've been told, but as a driver of roads, I know the pitfalls and dangers. There are a LOT of cops up around Markleeville. I was there not too long ago. And, BTW, there is less to do there than in Buttonwillow. I was there (BW) on the way to Monterey. (Oh, now I did it, the damn song is in my head).
Just driving around is fine, but something else is desirable. Sorry you guys have tired of the Monterey trek. I've only done the last one, but I can see your point. But, as I said in another thread here, I didn't do the Canepa thing or any of Thurs activities. That looked like that would keep high interest even if you'd been to Monterey the two previous times.
I can't offer any solutions as all the great country is either in NorCal, around the coast N and S of San Fran, or down here in SoCal. I wonder how they would like us in Laguna Beach!!!?? You can add a zero to the rates mentioned for BW.
Maybe not LB, eh?
FWIW, Cris had mentioned a year or two ago about a place closer to SoCal that he had in mind. I figured that he put it on hold because so many wanted to return to the Hyatt after last year's dinner/slide show.
I think that Sherwood also knows of a cool place to have a RGathering in SoCal.

Mike mentioned a discussion we had recently. At one of the last events in Cambria ('02), I stayed in Cayucas, about 15 miles inland from Cambria right off of Hwy 1. Although there's no track nearby, it's a quaint little town with a surprising number of hotels and restaurants, wide streets and a large parking lot on one end. And being inland a few miles, the weather is (was) less "coastal" than Cambria. They had their annual swap meet the same weekend as our event. Maybe we can combine that with our parking group (Audi included), talk them into reserving an area along the main drag during the weekend and make it a tourist attraction.
But it was only a suggestion before the decision was made for Monterey.

Cuyacos is cool. I stayed there when Jennifer and I drove the 356 up for our very first RGRUPPE event, before I bought my first 911.
