Screens for 40 IDA Velocity stacks

    All,
I've been considering some spherical, wire-mesh screens for the velocity stacks on my 40 IDAs.

I know, somewhere, someplace, this subject had been discussed before on this forum. Somebody had mentioned that wire-mesh "Tea balls" work pretty well, when split in half and properly mounted.

Can anyone steer me to this particular thread?
EDIT: I managed to find the "tea ball" thread - Ordered some up today...they are stainless steel & appear to be pretty robust. We'll see, eh?

Conversely, any other ideas, suggestions, recommendations? To refresh your memory...this would be a track-only application, in a mostly very dry climate.

Looking forward to your collective wisdom here...
    Thanks for the time

    Cheers

PS - the O.D. on the stacks is 2.5", or 64+mm

    Screen covers

Hello: Don't foget that the small sand will still go through those screens. You will also have to make some screen covers for the air correction jets as well. The factory made covers for the 914-6GT and the 911R 46 IDA Weber carbs. If you get dirt in those jets or grass the car with not run right. I would suggest that you use some kind of filter either the K&N which still lets some dirt in or a foam type filter. I have seen what the pistons look like in a 40 hour engine that ran with no screens. I'll tell you they where thrown away and the cylinders looked like someone filed grooves in them. How do I know, they were mine. If you go off track just once into the sand/dirt say bye bye to your pistons and cylinders. Thanks Eric

    Concur...
Fine particulates getting into the engine is the one thing that really worries me here...On the track, I run K&Ns now.

Mebbe I'll just set these wire screens up for the occasional local show & shine I go to on occasion. They are pretty butch looking...

NOBODY needs to trash a perfectly good set of pistons and barrels for the sake of an "aesthetic exercise"...

Thanks for the input - much appreciated.
    Cheers

    They're on...

    All,
    Mounted up my screens today...
I elected to keep the base(s) for the K&N filters intact, as that allows me to install/remove the K&N filters quickly. I'll be running the K&Ns on the track. These screens fit neatly inside the K&Ns...very tidy.

Again, as I mentioned before, I think these things are better for "eye candy" (at the local show & shine) vs any real benefit on the track...

At any rate, couldn't resist these little buggers...

    Photo attached, enjoy...
    cheers

    Tom,
    - The venturis are steel (vs aluminum) so I scuffed the upper edge of those for more "tooth".
    - Did the same thing to the corresponding surface of the screens.
    - applied a solid bead of JB Weld to the screens (which had the most surface area between the two) and wiped off all the excess material immediately
    - result appears to be quite solid...so, we'll see how all this holds up.

    cheers

NICE! how did you get the screens to mate with the stacks? now you need some R shields.

    Red face

Running my 2.0S engine with K&N's and water caps was LOUD. MY girlfriend and neighbors were not big fans, but I loved the sound. However, after a 400 mile trip a few months ago in which I was averaging around 115mph (mostly Autobahn driving), I had to use ear plugs or would have gone deaf. It convinced me to go back to the original air cleaner assembly. These tea screens must be LOUD at speed.
