Not to be ignorant, but I assume this is a 1967 911S, but he calls it a 1966 because it was built in 1966?
Just saw the SVRA at mid Ohio, looks like fun!

No, from the VIN plate, it is clear that it is a '66, he just calls it an "S" in the title. It is clearly prepared beyond "'67S" specs, with 13:1 compression and '69S heads, etc., I think to optimize for the 2-liter classes in vintage racing. A stock '67S would be less potent.Originally Posted by NEOhio911S

Looks like the seller didn't want to damage the VIN plate in a front end fender bender, so he mounted it next to the trunk chassis VIN.
With a 13:1 compression I would think that the engine would need to be twin plugged? Unless he is running pure rocket fuel.
This is no street car, but it's fun thinking about the possibilities of bringing it back to one!
Not so. As discussed in an earlier thread, that is the correct position for the aluminum VIN plate on a '66. It was moved to the front lid latch panel in '67.Originally Posted by gruen911

I have the 24th 911 built for the 1966 Model year (just purchased last week), and the aluminum chassis plate is located on the front trunk panel, in the same location as my 1970 S.
His chassis number on that racecar indicates a 1965 car - not a 1966.

Yes, I didn't check the VIN against the books, I was assuming the owner knew what he was talking about, but that was definitely foolish, since he also said it was an "S" . VIN #301641 is definitely a '65 model year. The change on the location of the VIN plate also seems to have been done sometime in the '66 model year when the front latch panel was revised as well.Originally Posted by roblav
I am curious, though, about your '66 now. How do you know it was the 24th 911 built for '66? By your VIN #? According to this old thread on a '65 for sale, the assumption of sequential build dates and model year by serial number is not necessarily accurate, according to the way the factory ran back then, and issues with the information that is available from multiple sources that seem to conflict, along with the fact that many '65s which were imported were registered as '66s, etc. Do you have some special documentation from the factory that confirms this "24th built" number somehow, or are you estimating by your VIN# according to the published accounts of #303390 being the last of the '65s?
BTW, the auction closed for $40K on this sweet little race car, regardless of what year it was.

Tom,
Good points...
Yes - I was assuming that mine is the 24th 1966 911 built because of the VIN. It is 3034XX. (You can figure out the number...) This car is very original and from Texas (it shows). Here are the highlights:
Wood dash
angled 911 scripts
Wood steering wheel (steel)
PORSCHE all in one word script on deck lid
Gas heater
chrome steel wheels
Solex carbs (these are the funkiest carbs I've ever seen)
With the car came the official factory "Accessory List" and associated price list booklets dated Sep 1965.
It is fun comparing this older car with the 70S side by side. The build quality in the chassis is better in the older car. The seams have more spot welds and are tighter. I always liked the SWB cars...
