    Need 901 gearbox education

Im cross posting this between here and Pelican. I know you guys will know a good bit about these since so many of you have them.

My new project car is getting a 901 when it goes back together.

I know that, just like the 915, there were several iterations of the 901 gearbox over the years it was used. Early AL cased units, type 911 70-71 mag cased units, 914, and even 912 boxes.

The later 70-71 mag units seem to be the most desirable from what I've read so far. Most desirable due to the lighter weight and that they work with the available LSD units and aftermarket billet intermediate plates.

So what’s the best one to start with? Outside of the intermediate plate and the LSD, what other upgrades can be made to a 901? Engine for the car is not even close to being finalized or payed for, but it will be a small displacement, hi rev, and above anything else, lightweight.

    TIA

    901 box

Hello: I would use the 68-69 aluminum box. You won't have to buy the intermediate plate, lighter clutch setup and you can change them faster at the track with the early clutch setup. They will handle the power from a 2.4 with no problem and there are plenty of them out there. Lastly they are a little heavier than the mag boxs but stronger as well. I believe Quaife and GT both make limited slips as well now. Thanks Eric
