    Question HELP; 67S or not??

    Hello fellows,

Can someone tell me whether this 67' 911 is an S or not? the chassis number is 305183. This is what the guy told me, but he could have forgotten to mention the S after the number. But even if it doesn't have an S after the chassis number, can't you still find a way to distinguish whether the car is an S or not?

    Thanks
    Erick

Without the S after the 6-digit VIN#, it is likely a "Normal" '67. There are many ways to tell the difference, but the most important would be the Type number of the engine. An S had a Type 901/02 engine and the others would have Type 901/05 or 901/06. The engine serial number would start with "96xxxx" on the S instead of "90-" or "91-" on the Normals.

Some of the "normal" 911 models were converted to S engines by previous owners over the years, though, so even this is not definitive if the engine is not original. The transmission type was 901/02 on the S model also, while the "Normal" had a Type 902/1 or 902/0 transaxle. There were suspension and trim differences as well, including the 4.5" x 15" alloy wheels, vented brake rotors, dash, rear ARB, leather steering wheel, etc., most of which could be optioned on the regular 911.

Weber 40 ID S carbs (for the S) instead of ID A 's

Oh yeah, and the "normal" normaly has the worlds biggest E-brake light below temp gauge instead of the combination oil temp/pressure gauge of the S (and the 65-66 non S ).

But those can be swapped also of course.

    John,
Not necessarily. I recall reading somewhere that the early (late 66) 911S's came with IDA 40's.

I could be wrong, but in the books I have the 901/02 only mention the 40 IDS

Johnson shows that #s 305 101S - 307 360S (the early run) have the IDS
Frere - Compared with the 901/05 used at the time ...the type 901/02 engine differed in the following main points " - the 4th diff. listed is "Type 40 IDS carbs (rather than the 40 IDA) "
Also the Performance handbook lists the 901/02 with 40 IDS Webers.

Though you wouldn't be able to easily check them Erick - the exhaust/intake ports
are also different in the "normal" and the S. ..and the pistons......and...

If it is a "Normal" - don't run away, they are still great cars - if the price is right.

This has been covered here before. 901/02 engines up to #960502 had 40IDA carbs, after that, they were 40IDS. See pg. 56 of BA's 911 Performance Handbook (2nd edition).
