Thread: Engine number ID

    Engine number ID

I am interested in an early '73T. I asked for the engine number from the seller & this is what he sent: 9011061015R .

Is this really the engine type stamping rather than actual engine number (it doesn't seem to resemble red book info)?

Could the '5R' at the end of this number indicate its not the original engine (73 is a 7R case correct), or is the info meaningless?

    thanks!

That is the # on the side of the case. Castings changed in 73 so some have 5R and some have 7R. The webbing changed on the inside to support the bearings better. The engine # is located on the fan support right side and should have a 631xxx # if I remember correctly for T's. There is another # located there 911/xx that corresponds with it being a T, E or S motor. Hope this helps, if you post the # we can help discipher.

The # 9011061015R is actually the casting # of the Magnesium fan housing not the case.

Without my book handy either it looks like a 1970 E motor. Do you know what the type # is? That would be the 911/XX number.

Thanks. That is odd. The seller is not very knowledgeable, so possibly doesn't know that. From photos the shroud appears to be red (although its hard to tell 100%) so its probably impossible to tell what the engine has now become without any records.

The VIN # is definitely a 73T, although the car has earlier style bumper guards. Is looking like a bit of a mongrel now!

This is a good time to obtain and post pics of the car here for the experts to comment on. Even though it may be a mongrel, if you can pick it up reasonably and not have a ton of repairs to make, it *might* be an ok cruiser.

Sorry I haven't logged in to follow up on this one in awhile.
The car was on ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT ) & in the end the seller was very unresponsive to questions. He did send some small interior photos but never returned email or calls requesting front trunk & pan photos. He said the car had been repainted with some overspray but that was about all the info I gleaned. $12,000 seems high to me considering the 2.2 engine. I wonder if the winner is aware of that?

In the meantime I have come across this fairly original 2.2T. Mechanically it seems in good shape, paint is original, but the car isn't rustfree as you can see. As far as the seller knows only the drivers door, rear trunklid & front bumper (surface) has rust, but I don't think he gets his hands dirty working on the car. If rust repair is needed is there any reason to pay a premium for original paint? If the rust is constrained to these areas is it even worth picking up a T like this w/ the intention of using it as a driver & gradually fixing it up, or does it sound like a money-pit?
