Concours Question 1970 MFI Aircleaner components

The air cleaner box and snorkel on my 1970E MFI are made of plastic although the connector ring between the 2 is metal. They are the same style as all the others I have seen but it was pointed out to me at the DanaPoint Concours that these plastic components are usually all metal. I can't imagine why they would have been changed and were there later models with same config that were plastic that could have replaced my originals?

Can someone check Dr. Johnson's book for me as there is a set on ebay that I could try and acquire that are all metal and look as though they would fit my 2.2

    thanks

The link for Ebay you listed is a carb air cleaner.
Edit: Dr Johnson's book doesn't list anything for motors unfortunately and the black and white photos are good in composition but would have been nice to see in color.

My 1970 911S is all metal, and it is definitely an MFI box. My last 70E had an all metal box too.

any ideas on why this would be plastic - what cars/engine thes parts are appropriate to?

Whomever told you that was not accurate.

The PET specifically says that the aircleaner housing for MFI cars through 1971 is "plastic material" 911 108 027 00. The older version is metal through 1968, 901 108 028 01 (for the T) or 901 108 008 00.

The one on my '66 is metal, the one on my '71 is plastic.

The carb'd versions do not have the holes at the back for the brass cold-start sprayers (through 1971). I don't know what the plastic '72- look like, they had cold-start tubes integral with the plastic stacks.

my 70 targa (model year 71) has a metal air cleaner housing, but the snorkel is plastic, with a little metal tube for warm air. Here a picture of it when i temporarily used it on my 73 coupe awaiting the plastic stacs etc.

thanks guys for all the great info this board is the best and we should be proud of this collective knowledge.

I feel good now that my original 70 is indeed original and is as often the case a little wrong info can go along way but this board can right those wrongs.

I don't think the information I gave you is wrong. I have seen a number of metal air cleaner housings in '70 cars (others are reporting the same thing here) and several plastic ones in unmolested '71 cars. We have an unmolested '70E (#0498) with a metal air cleaner housing with metal snorkle. Why is not plastic? I think the transition roughly began with the '71 model year cars or maybe Porsche mixed them in '70.

it seems there are sometimes differences in same yr model stuff so guess both can be correct. I just can't imagine why my original car would have that changed but I do have flat sixes and those are not correct.

    FWIW...

My 70E has a metal housing and snorkel. The numbers match on the car and (to my knowledge) the engine has never been rebuilt or altered.

I wouldn't be surprised if the dividing line between components was fuzzy, we have seen it in so many other aspects of these cars. The mystery continues...
