Thread: Coupe, Sunroof Coupe or Targa?

  1. #1

Wink Coupe, Sunroof Coupe or Targa?

Which do you most prefer on the 65-73 911's?
    1)Coupe
    2) Sunroof Coupe
    3) Targa

FWIW, I voted for sunroof coupe. I had 3 targas and 2 coupes before settling down to my 67 s/r coupe. Some will say that they leak, don't work and add extra weight. I suspect that's just envy from the coupe guys because mine has never leaked and always worked with a push of the factory button. It lets in air and light on nice day, keeps out the noise when driving fast, and keeps out the rain on bad days. As for the extra weight, since I am not racing her on weekends, and have already lost at least 40lbs by going with PeterZ 911R seats instead of the stock seats, the sunroof weight issue is not an issue. Considering all this, why can't you enjoy a little sun/moon/stars, breeze and music when driving an old sportscar hard on a Saturday night or a Sunday morning?!

    One of each !!

If I had to choose only one version it would have to be a non-sunroof coupe - purest shape, lightest, best handling & less prone to leaks...

We actually do have one of each at the moment.

My order of preference is 1) Sunroof Coupe 2) Coupe, and 3) Targa.

    Um...you need only two...

A really nice (non sun roof) coupe to show too your friends.

Then a ratty targa to strip, rod, and slam. You know, pull the side glass, weld the doors shut, hot rod the engine, sort out the suspension and rip around with your friends.

I have none of the above.

Targa to drive, enjoy sounds, sun, wind, open roads, and
Coupe to track, look at, admire design details...
Sunroof? what for? Don't you have enough problems already?

Bill's first law of sunroof driving: If the sun does not hit you in the eye as soon as you open the roof, you will immediately need to turn a corner, and THEN it will!

My thought is that if youare gonna get a conv. it should be a late model one to avoid the effects of old age on moving and mating parts between your head, the car's interior and the rain. So I had a Boxster for a while.

Putting a lot of wt. over your head is bad for handling, and choppin a slot in a unit body weakens it, making it a flexy flyer.

But the fun from having light and air is undeniable.

So... I opted for a sunroof coupe. That's my compromise.

Bill Verburg has a targa with a 3.8RS engine in it... so at least some will move further out on the body flexibility scale even while going for more power and performance.
