    911 rally cars

I had the honour last week end to be in charge of the ex-Zasada London-Sydney 1977 911 Carrera 3 at the Rally Day at Castle Coombe Circuit in England. James Avis brought along his 1970 ST that was driven by Bjorn Waldegaard in the 1971 RAC Rally. Bjorn was on hand on Saturday and piloted the ST around the very wet circuit with Paul Davies, of 911 & Porsche World in the passnger seat. That magazine will be doing an article on the 3 911 rally cars that were there that day. The other is a 1984 SCRS. I persuaded Bjorn to geive me a couple of laps in the Carrera 3 after he had driven the ST, what a demonstration of car control!

Oh my Nick, what a group. I'm sure I would have burned up the camera taking photos on such a day!

The Waldegaard car is one of my all-time favorites. Riding with Bjorn himself? Priceless! (the cliche fits here)

Nick, the #0 Audi reminds me of a car here in Stowe some 15 years ago. A gentleman had a red/gray/black on white Audi rally car in his stable. The car was in as-run condition from the South American rally, ex Hans Stuck I think. The family was in upheaval as they thought he was terminal from something aggressive and the 16 year old son had free run of the cars. The boy had taken to bashing this historic rally car (full cage, harnesses, 6 huge driving/fog lights, etc) through the back-woods logging roads. Being all liquored up he crashed the thing many times. The local ford/chevy fix-it garage kept having to weld the A arms, rehang the mufflers, bang out the fenders.... It was painful to see such a car beaten that way.

I wished that I could buy it to save it, but no.

For those who don't have it... a couple segments in "TICKET to RIDE" is THE SCRS video...

During the Manx rally '84 SCRS co-driver Terry Harryman interrupts is rally notes after his driver Ari Vatanen bounces off a wall with a very British "GOOD GOD"... then picks up right where he left off...

    Well worth it...

Cheers for a while, gett'n ready for Monterey ... back on Sat....

    Thumbs up

Nick, that ST lifting a wheel is my new favorite 911 action shot. Just wonderful. You lead a charmed life ol' chap!

I'm with you Jens - what a shot...

The Carrera 3 spent some time in Australia I think after the London - Sydney...?

It was for sale @ Francis Tuthill's a few years back?
