    73 911 targa?

Hoping to find out some info on this car. It's vin# 9113110258. I am looking at buying this car. It is in great shape and runs great. It has been restored I think modified. I am not sure if it has been and what has been. I hope somone can help me with that. I have looked at lots of pics and still not to sure even if it is a 1973 car? I really love the look. It handles great on the road. We had it up to 120 mph and very smooth... The owner is asking 20,000 canadian. Is this realy steep or not to bad. I don't think the engine has been rebuilt and car has 92000 miles. Hope someone can give me some help on the purchase of this car?

How to put this politely? Let's say that this car would be more valuable if it had been left in original condition. I would advise you to hang on to your money...

    Silversurfer,

I would probably pass on this car and find something else out there that is more of a correct car. You could buy a much nicer original car with the money you would spend on this car and in no doubt would reach 120 MPH easier and even faster.

Get the mechanicals checked. Don't buy it on looks or the fact it goes fast. There is enough that can go very wrong that you will spend $10,000 fixing it. But if the mechanicals check out and you "love the look" than go for it. Just realize that the advice you will get from most owners here is that the car is not stock... it is not original... so therefore it sucks and is ugly. But if you don't care about the Porsche tradition and heritage -- and you just want a red car that goes fast -- buy it and enjoy the hell out of it. Just don't go into it trying to return it to the way the factory sent it out. That would take too much money and take all the fun out of it. Hell, you could just pry the hood emblem off pretend it is a Lotus kit car and drive happy. Good luck.

If you are not sure that the car has been modified I would recommend spending more time learing about cars from this era. Having more knowledge about these cars will help you make a better decision about the condition and value of any car that you may be interested in.

    Hey Silversurfer,

The vin# tells that the car is a 911T from 1973. Itīs apperence has been heavily modified with a complete body rebuild. If you are in to these early 911īs, like the guys on this forum, you do not consider such a body modification a plus at all. On the contrary, it is an act of violence to molest the beautiful original design. The 911T-engine for this car should have a serial number of this type: 613xxxx if it is the original one. But it doesnīt matter much, since the car will never be worth bringing back to original condition.

You can find a much nicer and more original car for $20K Canadian. If you like the look of impact bumpers and no horn grills, buy a later car. You will get the look for the same price, plus possibly a 3 liter motor and galvanized body.

If you want an early car, go elsewhere. This car is a bit of an abomination, an extreme example of misguided attempts to modernize a car during the '80s. If this car were a rust free numbers matching 'S', I'd consider it as you might be able to make it worth your time and money. As a 'T', no way.

Best of luck in your search.

Hey thanks for the reply on this car. I have been finding out about these types of cars and that is why I am here, to ask the experts. This info backs my feeling on the car and now totaly know that it has been a hatchet job to the original 73 targa. I really like the look of the car and it is in mint shape. Someone has put a lot of time and money into this little machine. I think it will need engine work soon and if that is the case 20k for a fake look. It's a no brainer... Thanks again.
