    Muffler Coatings

Hey Gang - I have Dansk sport muffler I need to get coated, the stock black paint is a joke as we all know. I have called a certain "specialized" shop in Huntington Beach and they quoted me $225-250: eek:. That seems very high, I thought it should be about $100-150. Does anyone have any recommendations of other shops to call in the So Cal area?

I may just end up cleaning it up and painting it with Dupli-color ceramic high heat paint.

replied to your other posting on pelican but adding: the dupli-color sucks as bad as the dansk coating. actually - i don't think anything sucks as bad as the dansk coating.

Thanks for the tip Bob I used it on my intake manifold and it's held up very well. But a muffler maybe a diffrent story.

Didn't you get a muffler coated for around $125?

If you end up painting it yourself, try POR's Black Velvet. I painted my sport muffler with it and it's doing pretty well after about 2000 miles. It brushed on and took a few coats to get good coverage. Also, it dries glossy. But once it heats up it turns a nice flat black.

I can tell you from experience that POR high temp silver does NOT hold up on a sport muffler...

I had my heat exchangers and muffler powder coated years ago (probably high heat stuff) before specialized coatings came onto the scene. However, it's still holding up. Swain Tech, Jet Hot and other ceramic coating-types should be a lot better in protecting the base material.

    Harry,

What kind of coating for a non-stainless 912 exhaust, and where do you send one in the midwest? I expect to have it stripped at American Metal Cleaning here in Cincinnati first. Is powder coating an option? Thanks

HPC Coatings are excellent, they do a grey ceramic coating which can be applied inside and/or outside. This is a very good match for the original exhaust finish colour except it is permanent. It lightens off in colour after it has heat cycled a few times. They are at www.hpcoatings.com down under their turn around time is approx 7 days.
