    Color tag

    Hi,

Just to show the difference between an old original color code tag and the later one. Clearly a difference in letter thickness. They show up in eBay all the time. I think I will stick the old one back one after i try to fix it up a bit.

Is this for your RS? The tag on my car has 8 and 3 instead of 9 and 2. I have been told the middle # is the place of paint application and I have also been told it stand for the place of manufacture of the chassis. Anyone know the answer?

I like original stuff but if it was me I would restamp the new one and use that one. Your original one looks pretty far gone for a new painted car. Just MHO.

    color tag

You are absolutely right Brian, and it's for my RS, yep.
The first three digits are the color code, then where it was painted and finally the manufacturer of the paint. Lesonal 1, Glasurit 2, but 3 no idea. If I can find the right metal stamps I might go for the new tag, but first I'll give it a try to get the old one a better look.

The third was Herbol, but not sure about which # goes with which manufacturer. Per page 91 of Dr. Johnson's book.

If you find a correct replacement please post, I am in need of one for my 73 S in even worse shape than yours.

    Replacement color tag

    Rick,

The replacement tags show up frequently on eBay, otherwise they are still available from the factory. PP, Stoddard might have them as well. If you have no luck with them, then I might be able to source one for you.

Thank you for the offer. I'll see what I can come up with first.

Here is the tag in my RS. I have not seen many tags that indicate that the car was painted at location '8', most of the ones I have seen indicate '9'.
