Thread: Rally can be dangerous

    Rally can be dangerous

Just got back the from the WRC Rally Deutschland. I was navigating in the ex-works 1977 London to Sydney 911 and my brother, Peter, was navigating for Jim Avis in his ex-works Bjorn Waldegaard '71 RAC 911ST. They has a slight "off" on stage 3 in the vinyards over the Mosel River. It took 4 hours and several 4x4s to get the car back on the road. The damage was fairly superficial (front bumper, left fender and rocker).

It's amazing to see an ultra valuable car like that put in harms way. Very cool, both because it is being raced and that everyone was OK.

It's a little early in the season to be running over grapes for Riesling isn't it?! But it sure beats using your feet....

PS - By the way, the Germans love it when they see one of their glorious early Porsche 911'w still driven hard. It more than likely evokes deep national pride in what their engineers and technical experise were able to accomplish when Porsche dominated the sportscar scene in the late 60's and 70's.
Kind of like the feeling we Americans get when seeing old pictures of the Ford GT40 in the mid 60's - or whenever I see a Shelby Cobra zipping around in Europe.

    Nick,

Is that the same corner where Manfred Stohl and Bengue (in the Skoda) went off in the wrc event proper...

I have to echo Ryan's questions - why not bring the car downunder for the Classic Adelaide of Targa Tasmania?
