What colour to paint 911R replica ?

    Hi guys,

I am getting close to the paint stage of the 'R' replica and am agonizing over what colour to paint it.

I had all along in my mind that it would be the traditional white, but now have second thoughts. Gulf colours would look great and as we are starting with a 'clean canvas' so to speak, would not be that hard to do.

But what are the period correct colours for a '67 car ? Gulf sponsorship didnt appear till late '60s right ??

Pics of the remaining real "R's" are either white, Silver or maybe orange. What other colours are correct for this period without slipping into the bright colours of the early 70's ??

I would hate to ruin the work done in creating a reasonably good & sympathetic clone of an R with the wrong paint.

What does the board think ?

on the 912 registry website they have a list of all colors and codes available for 65-69. (while its a 912 website, same colors were available for both)

    http://912registry.org/restore/pcode.htm

many, but not all, on the website have links to color samples.

    hey phil

my 2c: i vote no for white. i've always thought white cars are a little dull, plus there is already a white R rep in melb.

i also note no for yellow. i just don't like yellow cars. plus there is already a yellow R rep in sydney.

i say go with orange - or that cool leaf green colour.

    hi Ryan,

well you do have 2 black cars so thats probably why white is not yr fave colour.

You have to remember the 911R was built in 1967 and if you look at the racing Porsches of that era, they werent very adventurous with colours back then. These cars mainly had to go fast, handle and stop well. Looks and panel fit were probably low on the agenda. After all, we are talking about german engineers here who were far better known for their fantastic engines than being fashionable.

here are some pics below I have been pondering over colours. Some are real R's.

Ian H's R replica (in white) is just too clinical for me plus it rarely sees the light of day. In my mind, and probably in reality, some of the original R's probably had dirty fingerprints on them, stone chips, non-concours panel gaps. Heck they only had stickers on them to designate their heritage and model, not even real badges.

I am sure if I asked a 60's era porsche race engineer about what colour to paint it, his answer would be "the lightest paint you can find - and not by colour, I mean by weight".

You can never go wrong with Silver on any 911.
If you are doing a replica for a 911R you dont have many choices.
Iam with Obrut on white cars...dull & boring. (apologies to Bummler whose
white E is stunning), just my opinion.

I'd go with Silver like the car in the previous post & perhaps dress it up a
bit with a Red Porsche decal above the rocker. One could always change that back to the standard black decal if needed.

    I envy your paint agony

My vote is for either slate gray (6801) or tangerine (6809). Don Ahern (Rennman) has a very cool SWB rally car that you should look at. It is tangerine and is really nice looking.

Since it's a replica, and you're not trying to hide that, I'd suggest going any color combo of the time other than the white of the original 911R...just pick one that you like.

    Phil........ (I survived the weekend)

Ya' got me looking through my past Porsche pics (1000's) for a particular 911R/911R clone that his been in the pits at Monterey a couple of times... and for the life of me I can't come up with it...

But the jest of it is...

Slate Gray with a Silver racing stripe...

... and it took your breath away

May be someone else remembers the car
    Until then I'll keep looking...

    Cheers mate,

Proud addition to my signature ...

Hey... just found it on Pelican... It was Gary Emory's outlaw R clone
