    1967 911S Restoration

I mailed the renewal of my membership today -- I've had a lapse of membership for probably 10 years. I hope to use the resources available here to help with the long time coming restoration of my 67S. I've documented what I've done so far on my business website - Doubleby.com - and this weekend hope to set up a invitation only area somewhere for those members out there that I hope can really be a source of good information without cluttering up this thread with a lot of extraneous BS. I know SWB Sam has a car that is very close to mine in original equipment and one that I hope to get close to the same level of condition. I'm excited about what I'm doing but will need a lot of help in tracking down some parts and information and will have available for sale a lot of parts that I picked up along the way. Please visit my web site and after I figure out how to do a private forum I'll post instructions. Thanking everyone in advance for their assistance.

    Cool

    Bill,
I give a lot of credit to the guys who want to take a diamond in the rought and restore it to mint original condition. Just make sure you understand what you are getting yourself into. If you are looking to to restore your 67S to SWBS standards, get ready to bend over and open up your wallet wide!!! Once you are in, there is no going back...

    Thanks Gruen:

I'm in it, already bending due to my age and believe I have a reasonable budget that I'm working with. I doubt if I'll get to the same level as SWB Sam's but have to have something tangible to reach for. At the end of the day what I want is a damn good lookin driver.

    Talking

I got ya - aim for the stars and hit the moon! The only time I briefly entertained the idea of going all out with my restoration was when my car came out of the paint shop freshly wet sanded and glowing! It was bautiful and almost flawless.
Less than 3 days later while putting the car back together I forgot for just a minute that the wipers park on the passenger for the 67 (not the driver side like on my LWB). Well, I screwed down the wipers to park on the driver side and turned them on to make sure they work - there was my first scratch!!!! It wasn't bad, but it was there. And I had no intention of sending it back for a repaint. I accepted that the intention with the car had always been to drive it - and that was my goal. Who wants a car that you're scared to drive anyway...
A good story to illustrate my point: I was having lunch at a pretty exclusive golf club outside of Dusseldorf about 10 years ago with my then wife, and I left the table to go take a leak. I decided that the men's rest room was too far away, so I did a detour thru the parking to find a hide behind a nice tree. While walking thru the parking lot, I saw a late 50's flawless 300SL cabriolet with matching leather luggage set etc. After I got back to the table, I told my wife what I saw, and she said told me that there was a good chance that the car belonged to the guy named Harold who was a friend of her Dad's who was sitting only 2 seats away from me. I went over to ask him, and he told me that yes the car was his, and that he had bought it from Prince Von Somewhere or other - and had spent huge money and 5 years having the car restored to concourse condition. With that and a couple of beers in us, he asked me if I wanted to go take out for a spin with him thru a few of the back roads behind the course. Long story short, it was all gravel roads and it had recently rained. We must have gone thru at least a dozen deep puddles doing 50-60 miles an hour - and he couldn't have been more delighted!!!!
The underside of the car must have been a mess when we were done. Gotta luv that kind of attitude.

PS He let me drive for a while as well, and I must say that the 300SL (basically it's the cab version of the 300 GULLWING) seemed kind of clunky, big steering wheel made out of elephant tusk ivory and all...
