Thread: Cool Period Vid

  1. #11
I may be able to help.

These are big (6-22 meg) files, so there probably not very useful to dial-up guys. But they've got cool factory footage of 911's, 914's, RSR's (and vintage pit hotties, too).

They're short clips from an old Porsche promotional film.

    Porsche Test Track (10 megs)

In the Race Shop (22 megs)

Racing in the USA (12 megs)

    Safety Testing (6 megs)

Oh, yeah, they're MPEG4 encoded. If you have trouble playing them, try this link for the free decoder for the Windows Media Player, or here for the latest version of Quicktime.

    Second Batch

    Unibody Fabrication (17 megs)

    Paint and Assembly (30 megs)

Dyno and Road Testing (20 megs)

More RSR Shots, and the Joys of Sports Car Ownership (18 megs)

And a special bonus, illustrating that back in 1973, a 914 and a leisure suit had the magical power to keep the cops off your back, and would get the ladies, well, onto theirs.

Power of the 914 (2.5 megs)

All Quicktime, I'm afraid. But that's how we Mac guys do it.

Fabulous collection, Jack - thanks for compiling these.

Now - in 'Paint and Assembly (30 megs)' the early cars are in a bath, called an "electrophoric process" - this must have been something that did not give the degree of rust resistance that the Thyssen steel process (galvanizing) did...

    Anyone have thoughts on this?
I don't suppose there are any PhDs out there who specialize in the history of industrial chemistry....?

And... on a more plebian note, is there any way to make the images bigger?

Thanks Jack. I had seen a few, but not all of those videos. The Paint and Assembly video was the most interesting.

It's my understanding that Porsche went through several different (unsuccessful) rust inhibiting processes before settling on Zinc galvanizing in 1975.

To make the image bigger go up to the toolbar on the Quicktime player, click on movie and select double movie size. That’s how I do it...

    Thumbs down

I found a still photo of the Porsche engineers who designed the 911's electrical system. I can't tell if they are reveling in a particularly clever relay placement or celebraiting yet another unfused wire that will burn out the dash harness...
