Thread: What's more acceptable for "R" project?

What's more acceptable for "R" project?

I am debating using a 912 for an "R" project.... is that more acceptable than losing another 68 911 as a donor??

I know 68 911's aren't crazy valuable but still, there seems to be a gazillion 912's and I do not see them climbing in value all that fast.

Just want another opinion..... but aside from that angle would there be any other reason not to use a 912 as a donor? (It will go to 6 cyl too)

    THANKS

Don't think that acceptibility enters into it. Many a T is converted into an RS or RSR replica. Sounds like you found a very cost effective donor to build your R. I say go for it (and be sure to show me the result).

Sounds as good a use for a 912 as anything.

I believe Kurt zimmerman's car started out as a 912 and well...it's pretty badass.

    Yup, no 911 elitism here

Cheaper to build a big Type 4 powered 912 - missing the howl of the 6, but fun on a budget! There are a lot of affordable 12s on Ebay and since the 356 based engines have a tendency to die early deaths, why not?

    912/911 race cars

Hello: Do it then it will be one more car on the road. I'm finishing up a 912 engine and will tell you it costs more to rebuild then a good 911 engine. Take a look at some 911 race cars sometime and look at the engine mount area. You will see the old 912 mounts ground off. The 912 will make a wonderful conversion car and the chassis don't tend to be bent up or crashed as bad. Good luck with your project. Thanks Eric

I wasn't trying to be a 911 Elitist; it seems as good use for a 912 as a 'T' or 'E' or 'L' would be for this purpose. Perhaps I am an 'S' elitist; I would never condone converting an 'S' car to an 'R' replica.

    ?

    Thanks for the encouragement!

Does it really cost the same or more to re-do a 912 engine??!!

I am planning a stock rebuild w/ upgrades in the interim.... it will get a full six cylinder at a much later date along with all the other FG mods.....

I figure the price of admission was a no brainer, so here it is:

    4 cylinder options

Another option, though expensive, could be a Polo 4.

I think he can make a 3.0 litre version putting out 200+ hp.
