    "S" heads questions

I just got an email from Gabby in the Phillipines...he's the proud owner of a '72 S. I used his email as a sales pitch for him to join the registy, so don't let me down here guys...here's Gabby's questions:

dear paul, greetings. could i ask a couple of quick
    questions regarding the 72 S?
    1. where can i get a used cylinder head, my 2.4 has a
leak coming from one cylinder head which my mechanic
says must be changed or rebuilt. something tore off
inside, like a small mound over the tunnel for the
    valve.
2.is the metal material of the 2.4S cylinder head the
same as a 2.4E cylinder head?
many thanks and will wait your advise. gabby

Now I have a couple of my own...are new 2.4S heads still available? Are they the same as the heads used on the 2.7 RS?

Have'm try the good Porsche machine shops... like Comp. Engin. or Oilies, maybe good repair shops have a serviceable single ... and Andail of course

    something tore off
inside, like a small mound over the tunnel for the
    valve.
Sounds like a valve guide boss...

2.is the metal material of the 2.4S cylinder head the

Yes the material is the same ... the heads are different

Now I have a couple of my own...are new 2.4S heads still available?
WOW!... Great question... maybe... try Porsche, then Mahle, then Andail

Are they the same as the heads used on the 2.7 RS?
Yes... just checked the book and the 2.4S head is the same part number... However, the copper head gaskets on the RS are narrower

    Hope this helps buddy...

    Paul.
The only difference from a 2.4S -2.7RS head is the RS head has a slight machined chamfer on the outside of the cumbustion chamber for extra piston clearance..

    Robert is right of course,

I had to have mine 'stepped/chamfered' for my rebuild as well...

However it's curious that the 2.4-S and RS heads have the same number in the parts book... can you explain Robert...

    Cheers,

Indeed, "S" heads and 2.7 RS heads carry the same part numbers as Porsche doesn't make a distinction between the two.

Now, Porsche's 2.7 heads (non-MFI) have slightly larger chambers (about 4-5cc) and carry different part numbers.

Normally speaking, we do not chamfer the surfaces on the 2.4 heads when using the 2.7 RS P/C's to help get a tad more compression than the 8.5:1 these come at. The additional squish also help reduce any possibility of detonation as long as you use good gas. Of course, final deck height plays a role in what you do here,...

Steve, are the "S" or "RS" heads still available new? Available single, or only in sets?

    Paul:

Indeed, they are still available as Porsche has 17 of them in Germany.

Now,.........are you sitting down? These run $ 3327.14/each and you'll need valves, springs and retainers.
Yessir,...thats over 3 thousand, each and without valves.

Guess that puts a spin on what 2.4 "S" heads are worth, eh?

    What exactly is the difference between the 2.4 T and E and S head? Couldn't a 2.4 T head be transformed to a 2.4 S head?

    So Steve,

These S heads are NOS from Porsche and only 17 left in all their stock??? If so, I'll jump out of my seat and land on the moon.
