Does this look like the real thing? seems like it but wonder about buying things from outside the country. Anyone around SoCal refurbishing originals?

Definitely the real deal, just be aware of all the other crests on offer on eBay. Too many fakes, repro's etc, but you have probably read all the threads about it. The crests are restored down under, haven't seen anybody doing it in Europe, no idea about the US either.

I'll try to get pictures of my crest taken this weekend to post. Brian is right. I have had one done. It was about $200 and it looks like new. The enameling is really cloisonne (glass) and the resulting crest is gold plated (18K).

There is something funny about the one that is listed on Ebay. They say that the emblem is cleaned up (and it looks really gold cleaned up) then it is enameled and then it is glossed over.

The proper process is:

1. Acid bath to remove all the old gold and enameling. The emblem should look a dark copper color when it is down to the base metal.
2. Multiple layers of (glass) enamel, filed and refilled to make a smooth surface.
3. Gold Plating.

There is no gloss over the enamel. The enamel is glossy, it is a glass surface. I would be a bit wary about this one. Something's not right.

Just as another comment. I have seen some restored crests with the gold polished so that it looks like jewelry. The original crest has an unbuffed gold surface. It looks very gold, but not shiny. Mine matches the original.

Also, the orange bars on the crest aren't really orange. They are an orangey/red. When the bars wear, they turn a lighter orange. The repro's are more orange, the newer Porsche replacements are red. Joan has some of the original Orange/Red that was used, and that is what she used on mine.

It's the real thing but due to the restoration are details lost on the horse. There are at least 3 spots in which an original unrestored badge has sharper lines.

OK, at the risk of having my restored crest blasted by the "experts" in the crowd, here it is mounted on the front of my car. (excuse the angle, I took it tonight in the dark of my garage, and needed to position so I didn't get a flash back into the camera.)

I will say that I am really happy with everything except for the gold plating. It needs to have a bit heavier coverage, so I am sending it back for replating. She is very willing to please, and did a great job, IMHO. This badge was really damaged, and she needed to straighten it, pound out a dent and reweld one of the pins that was loose.

So, after all of that, I am really pleased. BTW, I got the original for free from a guy with some other stuff that I bought, so the $200 restore was my total cost.
